WSC U15A Girls Win The Casey Cup!

A brilliant win by Williamstown SC’s U15 A Girls today in the Casey Cup final.

Playing a year up in the U16’s, in bitterly cold and wet conditions that had most Melbournians rugging up at home in front of a heater or fire, our girls got off to a sleepy start and copped an early goal, but then they switched on and took the fight to the opposition.

A second goal to Williams Landing created a 2-0 score line, but all was not lost. Instead of dropping their heads, we showed great resilience and fortitude. From the restart, we went straight on the attack and within a couple of minutes, after a good team build up, Jenny slotted our first goal and we went to the break down 2-1.

In the second half we were with the wind and in slippery conditions the girls were instructed by SuperCoach Trav to get plenty of shots away, which they set about doing. We were met with a stubborn and composed Williams Landing defensive unit until Anna took a shot from long range and lobbed over the keeper to bring the scores back to level… 2-2.

Both teams played well and in fantastic spirit as strong tackles were followed by “are you ok?”.

Final whistle blew at 2-2 and so off to a penalty shoot-out we went….. a tough way to end things and never nice for the vanquished….. with our makeshift keeper, Maddie Burton, facing her first penalty shootout, she deflected the first shot onto the crossbar for a good save. From there it stayed tight as both keepers made a couple of saves but our girls finished the job with a 2-1 penalty win.

It was a real team effort across the tournament and the girls all played well, representing our Club well both on and off the pitch

Well done!
